Injection Mould Tooling Services

Your injection mould tooling specialist, based in Plymouth, but also servicing the UK from the Midlands down to Cornwall.

Plymplastics – Your Local Injection Mould Tooling Company

Mould tooling is the process of creating custom moulds for plastic injection moulding. If you have a mould tool or tools that you need to re-shore from overseas (or another moulder), we can help. Alternatively, if you have a component drawing, we can work with you to manufacture a mould tool. We work closely with our chosen toolmakers to come up with solutions to your needs. You may have a great design, but this may not work in practice when being moulded. We use our expertise to find the right solution for you. By working with you to pick the optimum amount of parts (impressions) required per cycle, we can make the process as efficient as possible. As a cost-saving exercise, we can produce various parts within the same tool, this is known as a ‘family mould’.

Our Reshoring Service

We are often approached by customers who wish to move their tooling from overseas or another manufacturer for many reasons, including, improved lead times, improved cashflow or improved quality.

Depending on where the components are manufactured, this can have an impact on how long it takes to receive them from the order date, sometimes months! In a lot of cases, you will have to pay upfront before you receive your order, and with long lead times this can cripple a company’s cash flow. Imagine you have already waited for 3 months to receive your components, only to find they are not the quality that you agreed or are dimensionally incorrect. You will then need to have a conversation, which again leads to delays for replacement components.

Mould Tooling – The Design Process

Many customers will have an idea or a sketch of a design. We will liaise with you and our designers to create drawings that are suitable for the moulding process. If required, rapid prototypes will then be made for testing, prior to having a mould tool made. The application of the component is then decided upon.

Once approved, drawings are generated and reviewed. The best design is then agreed upon for the component, including shrinkage, tooling steel hardness, type of ejection, kinetic movements, and tool venting. The build timeline is constantly reviewed to ensure we meet the deadline.

T1 Testing Service

Once the mould tool is received, a T1 is carried out to identify a baseline process, visual appearance and measurement data. Occasionally, dimensions will be made steel safe for those that we feel are hard to predict. Therefore, the dimension would be left undersized for T1, parts measured and then a calculation from the data will tell us how much steel is to be removed to target the dimension. If the parts are not acceptable or the tooling needs modifying after T1, the process is repeated until the moulded components are acceptable and then begin production.

“I moved the production of two products to Plymplastics after an agreement with a previous company fell through. Plymplastics provides the service I was looking for - friendly, caring, collaborative and prompt. It's important for me to have a relatively personal relationship with business partners and this is what I get with Laurence. In terms of production, Laurence is always prepared to go the extra mile to get things right, and this is a much appreciated aspect of the company. Very happy with Plymplastics as a manufacturing partner.”
