ecomb Surf Wax Comb Case Study

Ecomb Wax Comb - Ecomb On The Sea Front - Plymplastics Injection Moulding Ltd

The ecomb is a surfboard wax comb that is made out of 100% marine waste including reclaimed fishing nets from the fishing industry, that may have ended up in landfill, or even ended up in our beautiful oceans.

The Challenge

The team at Plymplastics were approached by a potential customer whose vision was to create a sustainable surf wax comb, made from marine waste plastic. The aim was to provide surfers with a tool enabling them to scrape off, or rejuvenate the old wax on their surfboards, in an eco-friendly way. The ecomb is made using 100% marine waste plastic, from plastic fishing nets and other ocean waste plastics, which could have otherwise been sent to landfill, or even worse, get stuck in our oceans. It is estimated that more than 650,000 marine animals, including dolphins, whales, seals and turtles, are killed or injured by ghost fishing nets each year. In many cases, animals get caught and die in nets that are no longer used by fishermen. The customer’s main requirement was to ensure the product would be able to incorporate other companies’ branding as well as their ecomb branding. This was necessary in order to help them to break into the market.

The Approach

The customer provided us with a rough sketch of the proposed product, and we talked through their branding ideas with them. Time was spent liaising with the customer and getting to know the full specification of the product, to establish the full scope of the project. Once the design was approved by them, we set about designing the mould tool. Mould tooling is the process of making custom moulds for injection moulding. You may have a great design, but this may not work in practice when being moulded. It is therefore essential we work closely with you to find the right solution for you.

The Solution

For numerous customers to have their own branding engraved into the mould tool, the mould tool was produced with interchangeable inserts. We also produced a blank insert which also allows the surf combs to be printed as opposed to being engraved. At ecomb, we have a passion for all things relating to surfing, sustainability and our oceans, and this is where the ecomb does its bit to help out.

The Result

Twelve months after the mould tool was commissioned, our customer now supplies many surf shops around the UK and Europe, with not only their branding but their customers’ branding as well. Manufactured at Plymplastics, in the Southwest of England, any waste that is produced goes straight back into the process creating a closed-loop system.
